Virgin Digital Radio expanding to TV

Perstel DR301It seems counter intuitive, to listen to radio through your television, but it's getting an increasingly popular trend. As a result, Virgin Radio will be extending its two digital radio stations, Virgin Radio Classic Rock and Xtreme, onto the UK's Telewest digital TV platform. The move will boost their reach by an additional 1.2 million subscribers.

Expect to see Virgin Radio Classic Rock on channel 950, and Xtreme on channel 951. The first Rajar figures will be posted in February.

iPod one of Oprah's favorite things

oprahOprah gave away a boatload of Video iPods (and Crackberrys, but who cares about that) to an audience full of Katrina relief workers on her "My Favorite Things" episode of her show. The show was dedicated to the Hurricane Katrina relief workers who had no clue they were on her Favorite Things show. They also received a bunch of other stuff like UGG boots, cashmire sweaters, cookie dough, and some other stuff we really don't care about.

TUAW somewhat agrees with Oprah on this one, but has some other suggestions that might just one up the billionaire.

Ford Fusion going after the iPod Generation?

Ford Fusion iPodSeems like Ford is hoping on improving their image amongst the younger, hipper, and digital music crazed masses loosly given the moniker the iPod Generation. In one of their latest ad spots for the Ford Fusion, a commercial dubbed "Particles," caught the attention of the iPodderrati as it opens up with a young man using his iPod on the subway and then later showing him driving a Fusion.

Hidden message: "dude, if you like the iPod, you'll LOVE the Fusion!"

Not sure how well it'll work out for them, but hey, it's fun to see iPods used as props in commericials now.

Howard Stern replacement in St. Louis

Hoo hoo Robin!Howard Stern's replacement has been named for St. Louis' KPNT-FM (105.7 The Point). Rover's Morning Glory will be his replacement when he leaves their airwaves in his last broadcast on Friday, December 16gh.

During the period while Howard is gone to when Rover's Morning Glory debuts, The Point will be playing lots and lots of music. While this is being dubbed as a "new era in morning radio" for St. Louis, this is definitely isn't going to be "the era of huge ratings" as dedicated fans make their move to Sirius in January.

Warner 2nd in Payola Scandal

Warner Music GroupChalk another one up for admitting to Payola (pay for play). The Warner Music Group has agreed to payout $5 million in a donation to the Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors to hand out to nonprofit groups for music education. Warner will also pay $50,000 in legal fees Eliot Spitzer's crew spent on bringing these creeps to justice.

Back in July, Sony BMG was the first to admit to this practice. And they're wondering why podcasting is getting so popular?

DICE Electronics HD Radio Adapter

DICE ElectronicsIf you're one of those peeps who simply can't wait for HD Radio to become standard in cars 10 years from now (assuming a BMW 6-series or 7-series is bit out of your league), and you really really need to listen to crystal-clear "CD Quality" commercials today - well, DICE Electronics has got the solution for you.

The makers of the Dension iPod adapter, DICE Electronics debuted at SEMA to unveil thier HD-DICE adapter. It links to your car's headunit and with their stow-away black box converts any headunit to an HD Radio.

No word on how much this "dream" device will run you, but it'll probably ship right after CES, so save your lunch money you commercial-hungry maniacs!

Mirpod updated!

MirpodAn informed Droxy reader pointed out to me the other day that Mirpod - which originally was just a virtual iPod playing podcasts - has since evolved into something much cooler. It's not a standalone product, so it's no longer necessary to use your browser to find the podcasts you want to listen to.

They've also added some other neat functionality such as photo viewing with Flickr and even a video player. Good stuff!

The Eiteljorg Museum get Podcasting

Eiteljorg MuseumMuseums really seem to be going head first into the podcast foray. The Eiteljorg Museum is no exception, having kicked off podcasting with it's "Into the Fray: The Eiteljorg Fellowship for Native American Fine Art" exhibition. The Eiteljorg Museum podcast, like several other museum based podcasts, is hosted by their curators and includes interviews with artists featured in the show. The discussions on American Indian and mainstream art may spark the imaginations of many listeners though.

You can tune into the Eiteljorg Museum podcast through iTunes or through their website.

HD Radio Gets Funding From Intel Capital

HD RadioIntel Capital has obviously been sold on the smoke and mirrors that iBiquity has been dishing out, as they've just thrown a bunch of investment money at the HD Radio developer. While financial terms were not disclosed, you can bet that this is a much needed injection of cash in an industry that is not looking too good versus satellite.

The goal apparently is to use the additional capital to fund the development of portable HD Radio devices. Possibly with integration into portable digital media devices and mobile phones coming down the horizon. Not a bad goal, considering that marketshare isn't the only thing they need to worry about -- they also have serious competition in pocketshare.

DAB Use Jumps 165%

DAB Digital Audio BroadcastingRajar, a radio measurement firm in the UK, has released some very interesting numbers showing that DAB listening (via the radio) has overtaken listening via digital TV and the internet for the first time. The number of people tuning in via DAB has jumped by 165%. Damn.

There's also been a significant drop in terrestrial radio listenership. In 2004, AM/FM listeners accounted for 81.8% of total listening hours, while in 2005 this number dropped to 74.8%. Meanwhile, the number of DAB listeners (either through a DAB receiver, or digital television or internet radio) has jumped by 4.7 Million, or a whopping 25%, when compared with a Rajar survey a year ago.

Looks like the UK is doing just fine with DAB. HD Radio in the states? well.... that's another matter.

iTunes Top 10 Music Retailer

Apple iPodAccording to the NPD Group, the iTunes Music Store has come into its own and has bested the likes of Tower, Sam Goody and Borders for the 3rd quarter of 2005. This puts Apple's iTunes into the Top 10 list of leading U.S. Music Retailers coming in at number 7. It should be noted that the numbers were based per unit - so 12 song downloads = 1 CD. I think that's still fair enough.

Combine this with the fact that Apple has shipped over 30 million iPods since October 2001, and it shows that the digital music industry has gained some serious ground as of late, and even better, is starting to kick some butt!

Harvard Computer Science Podcast

HarvardOne of Harvard's Computer Science classes, "Understanding Computers and the Internet," has seen a massive fanfare from putting class lectures up as podcasts. Since making the lectures available as both audio and video podcasts via iTunes, "Understanding Computers and the Internet" Podcast has made the jump to the top 100 podcasts and the "New-and-Notable" list on iTunes. And damnit, there's bragging rights in that!

Somehow I can't see this as being a good tool for a "Introduction to Object-Oriented Programming" but for a low(er) level class like this, it's perfect. Just do a search for it on iTunes.
