NPR to start Podcasting?

Apparently NPR will not be renewing their contract with Audible and will be pursuing their own Podcasting strategy. NPR's beloved shows like "All Things Considered" and "Wait Wait... Don't Tell Me" used to be available on Audible, but after what I can assume was a lackluster performance, have since been pulled from Audible's library.

Instead it seems that NPR is finalizing their new Podcasting strategy as indicated from this letter, which sounds intriguing to say the least.

As a related side-note, Bob Edwards, formally of NPR's Morning Edition has found his way back to Audible through a deal with XM Radio.

UPDATE: Looks like NPR has a Podcast page up though it's hidden off the site. Who'da thunk it?

2. What are you talking about? That podcasts link has been there for a couple weeks now (and it *is* linked off the site), it just doesn't offer any of the real "NPR" branded content, except for SciFri.

3. How about integrating it into itunes?

They will have to take care about the distribution, and such a program with demand from all over the world could easily be picked up by itunes, which probably has a quite larger userbase then Audible. :)

5. The NPR 'podcast' page, aside from being old news, is definitely not hidden- there's a link right on their home page.

And the three shows that are listed as having podcasts are not NPR productions- they're produced by WBUR and WNYC, and the podcast links don't go to podcast feeds- they take you to the websites of the programs. There are no podcasts (yet!) of NPR programs like ATC, Morning Edition, etc.

Of course, anyone who wants to listen to those shows on their mp3 player has been able to do that for years- you just have to use streambox VCR, Total Recorder, or another program to download the Realaudio streams. (NPR has years of archives of old shows in Real format) I've been doing it for years- it ain't rocket science!
