Sirius signs content deal with Sprint

Sirius signs deal with SprintSirius Satellite Radio announced today that they've signed a deal with Sprint. Big news. Unfortunately, little else was announced about the deal other than that Sirius will be providing select music content to Spring PCS Vision subscribers, with the cost of the digital music service included in the Sprint subscription (not Sirius). We'll be finding out more later this year as presumably Sprint and Sirius have yet to work out all the kinks in the contract.

Sprint has the upper hand in this situation as they have the subscriber base, the infrastructure, and the technology while all Sirius is providing is 3rd Party content. As such, we smell a revenue-share for Sirius though the terms of the deal haven't been announced. It's also non-exclusive, so if XM wants to tread on Sirius' territory, they can.

Still, the exposure Sirius is getting with this deal simply can't be ignored. Consider that Sprint has about 42 Million subscribers including affiliates, and with the upcoming Nextel merger, an additional 16 Million subscribers will be coming on board. Sprint is in the process of upgrading their EV-DO network, which is capable of an average of 300-500Kbps, so the bandwidth is there to support quality digital music content.

XM has also said on several occasions that they're interested in providing content over cellphones, but it appears that Sirius has beat them to it... in announcing it at least.
